How much does a geodesic dome cost to build?

Any honest answer starts with a range and a list of things it depends on. The frame of a small conduit dome can come in under the price of a decent bicycle; a panelized timber dome with twinwall polycarbonate glazing is a different category of project entirely. What follows is what actually moves the number.

The four things that set the price

1. Diameter, non-linearly

Doubling the diameter does not double the cost. Surface area scales with the square of the radius, so a 8 m dome needs roughly four times the covering of a 4 m one, and the struts get longer and more heavily loaded — which can push you up a stock size, raising the cost of every member at once.

2. Frequency

Higher frequency means more struts and more hubs. A 2V dome has a fraction of the parts of a 4V of the same diameter. Frequency buys you a rounder shell and better load distribution; you pay for it in part count, connector count, and labour.

3. Build system

This is usually the biggest single lever. DomeFab prices three systems against a real stock catalog:

  • Bolted steel tube— 3/4" and 1" EMT conduit, galvanized fence top rail, aluminium tube, or Schedule 40 pipe. The cheapest route to an enclosed volume.
  • Timber and hub plates — SPF dimensional lumber from 2×4 up to 2×10, cedar, or LVL. More material cost, far more forgiving to build and to finish.
  • Panelized timber — the same lumber catalog, assembled as triangular panels. Most material, best weather performance.

4. Covering

Covering choices run from nothing at all (an open frame or shade structure) through 6-mil greenhouse film and shrink wrap, up to 1/2 and 3/4 inch CDX plywood or 8 mm twinwall polycarbonate. The spread between the cheapest and the most expensive covering for the same frame is often larger than the frame itself.

The cost nobody quotes: offcut waste

Dome struts are awkward lengths, and stock comes in 8, 10, 12, and 21 foot pieces. Cut naively and you can throw away a quarter of what you bought. The fix is to plan the cuts across the whole dome at once, packing short pieces into the offcuts of long ones.

DomeFab does this with a first-fit-decreasing bin pack over the actual stock lengths in the catalog, so the bill of materials counts the sticks you have to buy, not the linear meters you theoretically need. On a mixed-length dome that difference is real money.

What a costed BOM should include

  • Stock pieces to purchase, by type, with unit and extended cost
  • The cutting plan that gets your struts out of those pieces
  • Covering area including seam allowance, not just bare surface area
  • Hub count by vertex type, so connector cost is not a guess
