Dome cut lists and DXF fabrication files
Most dome plans sold online are a static PDF: a table of strut lengths for one dome at one size, plus assembly drawings. That is fine right up until your radius is not their radius. A generated plan set is a different thing — every drawing in it is computed for the dome you actually specified.
What a cut list has to contain
A list of lengths is not a cut list. To take a stick to a saw without thinking, you need:
- Cut length after hub offset — not the vertex-to-vertex chord, but the length that fits between two real connectors.
- End and bevel angles — the angle each end is cut at, which differs by strut class and by where the strut sits in the dome.
- Class label and count — so you can batch-cut and sort, and know immediately if you are short.
- A cutting plan — which stock piece each cut comes out of, so offcuts are planned rather than discovered.
Why DXF, and what to do with it
DXF is the interchange format every cutting machine reads. A DXF from DomeFab is not a picture of a plan — it is the geometry, at 1:1 scale, ready to drive a machine or a printer.
What gets generated
- Hub plates at the true angles for each vertex type in your dome, not one representative plate.
- Panel templates for panelized builds, per triangle type.
- Per-strut drill and bend templates — the piece that makes a flattened-conduit dome come out square instead of accumulating error hub by hub.
- Covering patterns with seam allowance included, so film or fabric can be cut without redoing the maths at the sewing stage.
If you do not own a CNC machine
Most people building one dome do not. Two options work well: send the DXF to a local laser, plasma, or waterjet shop — they take DXF as a matter of course and cutting a set of hub plates is a small job — or print the templates at 1:1 on a plotter, spray-glue them to the material, and cut or drill to the line by hand.
The honest limitation
Generated files are only as right as the inputs, and a plan set is not an engineering approval. DomeFab screens members against factored snow and wind for your location and flags strut classes that do not pass, but the output is informational: not stamped, not a structural analysis, and not intended for permit submission. A habitable or permitted structure needs a licensed professional in your jurisdiction.
