Geodesic dome greenhouse plans
Geodesic domes are one of the most efficient greenhouse shapes there is — more glazing area exposed to low winter sun angles, less surface area to lose heat through per square meter of growing space, and a structure that sheds snow and wind loads a flat-roofed hoop house can't match.
Why the shape works for growing
A dome's curved surface means some panel is facing the sun at a useful angle almost all day, unlike a flat greenhouse roof that's only optimally angled part of the time. The sphere-efficient shape also means less total surface area — and therefore less heat loss — for the same enclosed growing volume than a rectangular greenhouse of equivalent floor space. That's a real, physics-level advantage, not a marketing claim.
Sizing a dome greenhouse
Smaller dome greenhouses (roughly 3–6 m diameter) work well as a 2V or 3V frequency, low truncation (a 3/8 sphere is the wide, low-headroom-at-the-edge shape most hobby greenhouse domes use). A 3/8 sphere gives more usable bed area relative to the footprint than a taller 5/8 sphere, at the cost of some headroom near the walls — rarely an issue in a greenhouse, where beds don't need to stand in.
Doors and vents
Every panel edge is a potential vent location, which is one of a dome greenhouse's underrated advantages: you can place low intake vents and a high apex vent for real stack-effect airflow, instead of relying entirely on powered ventilation. Covering choices
- Rigid glazing (twinwall polycarbonate, glass) on a panelized or hub-and-strut frame — better insulation value and longevity, more upfront cost and cutting precision required.
- Fabric or film covering — lower cost and faster to install, common for seasonal or budget-first builds, shorter lifespan and lower R-value.
Snow load matters more for greenhouses, not less
A greenhouse with a lightweight, unattended structure over winter is exactly the case where an under-sized strut class fails catastrophically — often with a full season's crop under it.
